Below, a familiar sight stencilled on to the shoulders of most cities in Canada and around the world, making it safer for cyclists to navigate their way through busy streets and highways. I stopped on St. George St. in Moncton in front of Hillcrest School (where I went from grades 1-9) to get a shot of the simplicity of this bike stencil and what it represents.

I have been working hard with the Department of Transportation and Public Works to find a way to incorporate this cheap and easy way to enhance safety for cyclists on our streets and highways on Prince Edward Island. More and more people in Stratford are commuting to Charlottetown via their bikes. Someone at the Farmer’s Market approached me a couple of Saturdays ago and suggested that TPW look at painting these stencils along as many highway shoulders as possible. I have also suggested that “share the road” signs be strategically placed to help remind/educate motorists about sharing the road and to be more aware of cyclists using the shoulders and turning lanes as their pathways. Just think…. someday (hopefully in the not-to-distant future) townies, suburbanites and tourists alike will be able to ride their bikes along well marked roads and highways.
