The first Stratford Volunteer Expo took place this past weekend. The Town Hall gymnasium was lined with an array of booths and volunteers all working toward recruiting more volunteers. It’s not often you get to see so many volunteers in one room. Like other communities on PEI, Stratford has an active group of volunteers. Whether it be teaching others a skill, providing valuable community services, educating residents about new technologies or enhancing the social life of Stratford, these hard-working volunteers love what they do.
Here are some members of the Mayflower Seniors’ Club. Sitting left to right: Mary Kenny, Steve Stephenson, Doris Stephenson, Marion Richards and Ken Richards. Standing next to me is Stratford Town Councilor, Diane Griffin.
The Mayflower Senior’s Club is very active with activities taking place every weekday. They also host an annual English Tea Party. They have over 140 members and the membership fee is only $7.00 annually. (click on photo to see more groups from the expo)
With me are Nicole Campbell (left) and Kelsie McCaughey of Girl Guides. Nicole is a membership field worker and Kelsie is a guider in Stratford. There are over 60 Girl Guides in Stratford. (click on photo to see more groups from the expo)
When I was a kid, I belonged to Brownies and never went on to Girl Guides. Back then, Girl Guides was about learning how to cook and sew. Not that cooking and sewing were not important, but I was more interested in hiking and building lean-tos. Thankfully the Girl Guides of today have a much broader range of activities and learning. Here is a great website called “Between Generations – Girl Guides of Prince Edward Island“.
