On this, a day for mothers to be pampered and treated, I sit with my feet up looking out the front window at quiet streets and driveways heaped with ‘Spring pick-up’ items. Homes culled of past collections of bits of plumbing, bicycles and what nots. I am grateful to have a day…to myself… even if I am faced with the task of laundering all things red and otherwise.
Soon I will call my mother and tell her how sorry I am about ignoring her the past couple of weeks. She will say, “well there’s not much you can do about that Cynthia. You’re not in control of your life right now.” Ironic, but true.
My mother loves to talk about politics. She’s as sharp as they come. Her BS sensory buttons are always on and she knows it when she sees it. She is very quick to point it out and somehow remembers things politicians have said over the years and how those things can come back to bite them. For instance, if she lived on PEI, she would say, “well why all of a sudden is that McKenna fella claiming credit for lobbying for the Junior High School when he didn’t think it was a good idea before?”
It’s the simple things that make me smile when it comes to my mother.
I have been asked many times over the past few months, “what made you want to do this?”
Well, it would be too simple to just say “my mother made me do it.”. But, today especially, when I think about the reasons I have chosen to step forward, I can’t help but think of my mother. My mother is a strong, courageous woman. She has an innate sense of who she is and instilled in me the same thing. She speaks her mind. She is proactive and believes that the only way to make a change is to just do it.
“If you wait for someone else to get it done, it just won’t happen, so you might as well do it yourself.”
My mother, Elizabeth King is the best Mother in the entire world. I thank her for being who she is and encouraging me, by example, to step forward to try and make a difference.
HAPPY MOTHER’S DAY MOM!!
